  14. This periodic posting summarizes the contents of my Big List of Email
  15. Spammers.  The contents of the list are drawn from junk email that arrives
  16. at my mailbox and from reports posted to news.admin.net-abuse.sightings
  17. and news.admin.net-abuse.email; each entry is an email address associated
  18. with a piece of junk email.  There are no duplicates; however, several
  19. addresses are often associated with a single mailing.

  21. The list excludes addresses at certain sites that are associated with
  22. large volumes of junk email from multiple addresses; these sites are
  23. listed below.

  25. Addresses are removed from the list when I'm convinced that the relevant
  26. mailing has been stopped.

  28. The list contains many obviously forged addresses; some are probably the
  29. email addresses of innocent victims.  No attempt has been made to exclude
  30. these addresses, as the purpose of the list is to recognize junk email, not
  31. to enumerate guilty parties.  For this reason, among others, I won't make
  32. the list itself available.

  34. This posting is intended to provide a snapshot of the state of junk email.
  35. It is automatically generated and posted to news.admin.net-abuse.email on
  36. the 9th of every month.

  52. Addresses at these sites are *omitted* from the Big List.  I have blocked
  53. incoming email from these sites, either because they are dedicated sources
  54. of junk mail, or because they are essentially innocent sites that have
  55. persistent problems with email spammers.  The second category is important;
  56. it means that many of the entries in this list are *not* *dedicated* *spam*
  57. *sites*.

  59. It would be inappropriate for anyone to block email from these sites solely
  60. because of this list; seek independent confirmation.  Any list of this
  61. nature is necessarily a product of personal judgement; these are sites from
  62. which *I* choose not to receive email because of their junk email problems,
  63. but not everyone will agree.  Moreover, while the list is accurate to the
  64. best of my knowledge, I have made mistakes in maintaining it in the past
  65. and will probably do so in the future.

  201. Top 20+ sources:

  203. This list is probably the least meaningful part of this posting.  It
  204. attempts to list the 20 domains that appear most frequently in the Big
  205. List.  (The list is extended as necessary to accommodate ties, so that
  206. "extra" domains with enough appearances to make the list are included.)
  207. However, since the Big List contains many forgeries, these totals are
  208. largely fictional.  In particular, huge numbers of email spammers forge
  209. return addresses at aol.com; hence the large total for aol.com should be
  210. taken with many grains of salt.
  211.  
  212. The results are also skewed by the differing practices of ISPs in reporting
  213. to the Usenet community when they eliminate spammers.  AT&T WorldNet, for
  214. instance, is said to terminate spammers' accounts, but does not report such
  215. terminations to the world at large; therefore I can't know when to remove
  216. att.net (==worldnet.att.net) addresses from the list.

  218. The figures for netcom.com include ix*.netcom.com, but not netcom.ca.  The
  219. number for att.net should really be labeled "worldnet.att.net"; there is
  220. a separate domain called att.net, but all the att.net entries in the Big
  221. List are actually from WorldNet.
